Today a museum, 1914, a military hospital
Wardown House. Originally a country house and estate but converted for use as a hospital during WWI which is when this picture was taken.
It first opened as a Hospital in October 1914, and was used by the North Midland Division for the reception of their sick, under the care of a trained Sister and a staff of local V.A.D. nurses. Military Medical Officers administering the more in depth medical procedures. The Hospital provided accommodation for 65 patients.
In more recent times, it has served as the local museum and park. I don't think there is a child in Luton who hasn't visited it and been terrified by the full sized wax models of local folk going about their business. I know I was.
Matthew is back home for a week before he goes to France for the summer season. I therefore had a whisky with last night. Well, it would be rude not to wouldn't it?
