Death by Safety Measure
It being Cemetery Sunday I suggest this is a doubly appropriate photograph, taken this morning in Clarence Road, Bristol. They're going to put someone into a cemetery soon enough, I think. Officially called Toby Bollards, they have gained the more obvious term Tomb Stones. What idiocy is this?!
The line of foot or so tall concrete teeth divide a cycle lane from a traffic lane. Already grey in colour, the reflective strip is coated with road dirt and almost indistinguishable from the bollard or the road. The cycle lane is wide enough to get a lorry down , so there's no shortage of space for other means of segregation...
They're not all installed yet - this is a new pleasure foisted upon us - but already several have been struck including the one here. Ignoring the damage to ones car, imagine hitting on on a motorbike! Can you imagine how invisible they will be in the rain or at night. If they were on one of my sites at work we'd cone them off and paint them bright yellow as a dangerous hazard!
Ok, this is a photography site not my private soap-box. But you may gather I'm not happy. No doubt updates, following some FOI requests, will be found on my blog.
