Saving our lives
Rumours abound about the possibility that SS Blipfoto has hit the rocks and is sinking. I very much hope that the rumours are without foundation. Just in case, I have opened a mirror account on the 365 project site with the same name Talpa. Anyway, here is one that sank earlier.
There are lessons to be learned here. No commercial site can be relied upon to store our photographs and thoughts forever, they will always be in danger of disappearing with little warning. Equally it seems to me that if we wish to hand on our photographs to coming generations then electronic images are not the most appropriate medium. Will our grandchildren and beyond be able to retrieve and view our jpegs and the like, I very much doubt it. We are recording our world in unprecedented detail but in the main it will probably disappear into the ether. The irony is that our descendants will still be able to see the photographic prints made by earlier generations, but we will leave little trace if we rely upon digital images. I guess that the answer must be to record our lives and times with photographic prints, preferably carefully prepared black and white ones.
