London 2012 Day 6
One of the great pleasures of the Olympics is to watch a sport that you actually know very little about and a competitor who you've actually never heard of before, but because they're members of Team GB you're there on the sofa cheering them on & punching the air. Today it was Peter Wilson winning Britain's fourth gold medal of the Olympics with victory in the double trap competition. Each time there was a puff of pink powder as he hit a target there was a wee "yes" from me. When he then missed two targets with eight shots remaining it got a bit nervous, but those were the last he missed - Go Team GB.
In Judo a silver medal for Gemma Gibbons and a very poignant 'I love you Mum' after she won her semi.
In cycling a gold for the men's team sprint trio of Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy who smashed their own world record that they'd set in the previous round. Unfortunately though Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish were disqualified in the women's team sprint breaking the takeover rules when Pendleton overlapped Varnish's wheel too early. They had earlier set a world record, only for China to subsequently break it.
At Lee Valley in the Canoe Double (C2) Slalom Britain came first and second, winning both gold and silver. Must admit to getting a bit confused watching this one. Etienne Stott and Tim Baillie were first down the course setting the fastest time of the day. All the following teams failed to overtake them until the final pair of David Florence and Richard Hounslow who were ahead through the two checkpoints and raised their paddles in celebration as they finished. I hadn't noticed the graphic or listened to the commentary, they were in fact celebrating silver. Anyway they were all rather chuffed!
