Burlington Arcade

Opening in 1819, Burlington Arcade was the world's first covered center. It was built by Lord George Cavendish. who owned Burlington House which is next door, apparently to stop passers-by throwing oyster shells over the wall of his home. originally it consisted of a single, straight, top lit walkway lined with 72 small, 2 storey units. Some of the units have now been combined, reducing the number of shops to around 40.
