An Orange Lacewing
Native to the far north of Australia.
We were tendered in to Port Douglas this morning, so had time to do a bit of shopping before the trip. A bus trip took us to Kuranda, which is off the Port Douglas to Cairns road. It is a small town but has loads of touristy things to do and see.
Lunch was a kangaroo pie (tasted fantastic) and black coffee, followed by a visit to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. It was an hour of heaven surrounded by hundreds of butterflies. I managed to capture some of the examples (which I will put in flickr later), but the gorgeous blue Ullysses was so hard, as when it landed it closed its wings and showed the mottled brown underside, a good camouflage strategy.
We took the Kuranda Scenic Railway down to Freshwater Station. The narrow gauge railway was completed in 1891 to provide a supply route from the mining areas to Cairns. It runs along the Barron River and is surrounded by magnificent rain forest. Stunning!!
An excellent day!!
