Pony
Finally got to our cottage on Harris. Amazing place. Right down on the beach, with the most amazing views of the ever changing weather. As we watched the light come and go, with bruised and brooding skies giving way to stunning sunshine, this pony wandered up to the fence to stare as curiously at us as we stared at him.
Then it was on to an event in the Tarbert Community Centre where local genealogist Bill Lawson, and myself discussed The Clearances and my treatment of them in Entry Island. I showed a film of my research images from the Scottish settlements in Quebec, which included a headstone marking the grave of a man called Morrison from Strond in Harris. Bill, whose knowledge of island family histories is encyclopaedic, revealed that the Morrison in my film was the great, great, great grandfather of the young lady who was punctuating our evening with some beautiful Gaelic songs. It was actually quite a stunning moment.
