Guess what's for dinner?
Did this little fellow know that while Mr hazelh and I explored some of the side roads of the Outer Hebrides this afternoon, B popped a leg of lamb into the oven to slow roast for supper this evening?
We usually come to the islands by yellow tandem so we rarely make spur of the moment decisions to turn off our planned route, especially if the tempting side road involves (even more) hills. For the first time ever today we visited Reiningeadal in North Harris, and Kershader in Lewis, taking advantage of travel by car.
Afterwards we followed the route we took in 2001 from just north of Tarbert to Hushinish. We did this then on single bikes as part of our first ever 'bottom to top' tour of the Hebrides. We had completely forgotten how windy and hilly this single track road is, and wondered how I ever managed them on my own.
What made our last trip along this road by bike even more remarkable was that the brake pads on Mr hazelh's bike were shot by this point in the trip. While he could cycle up the steep hills, for the downward slopes he had to get off and run. We were also on a tight timetable because our friend M was meeting us at the pier at Hushinish to take us by boat via the island of Scarp up to our final destination of Baile-na-Cille in Lewis. It was a rather fraught morning of cycling on that day 14 years ago, but we did make it on time and enjoyed the rest of the holiday (with the brake pads eventually replaced in Stornoway).
Exercise today: not much - just a short walk at Hushinish.
