Still life with Asparagus

Over the weekend I saw a print (in "de Volkskrant" newspaper magazine) of a still life of Asparagus by the hand of 17th century painter Adriaen Coorte. I had not heard of this painter, but like Rembrandt and Vermeer he is a master of light. His still life is small (20 x 25 cm) and hang in the "Rijksmuseum" in Amsterdam.

So, as I bought asparagus on the market this morning, his painting came back into my mind. I just love these white asparagus. They have been on the market for a couple of weeks now and will only be there for a couple more. Then we have to wait another year to enjoy them. I just had to make this photo in honour of Adriaen Coorte.
