The Smelt

It's not often a small stretch of road has a name. This is on the 'main road' to Dufton from Appleby. I suppose there was a smelter near there at one time as lead mining was a major industry in the past.

When in a car it would hardly be noticed but running or cycling up it is a pig. It is steep, not sure of the gradient as there is no sign, and it is only about 50 metres long but it is unrelenting. Maybe I've suffered so much in the past that I have a 'thing' about it. Today I stopped to take a picture then walked up.Maybe common sense has finally arrived.
