Songkran

Back blipping on 16th

Songkran is the Thai New Year celebrations, from 13th to 15th April.  Chiang Mai is apparently one of THE places to see in the new Year.

The festival consists of getting yourself and everyone near you thoroughly soaked in water - the source of the water is irrelevant - canal will do just as well as anywhere else, but it was also coming from stand pipes in the street, paddling pools, buckets, water pistols ..........

It also, more seriously, involves large amounts of temple worship.  And on an even more serious note, large amounts of alcohol - the death toll on Thai roads is bad at the best of times, but substantially increased during Songkran.

We visited Wat Doi Suthep in the morning.  Then I expressed a desire to get some pictures of the city walls.  We knew there was a significant risk of water, but did not quite budget for how wet we would get.  We ended up buying new shirts on the Night Bazaar, before eating at one of the many cafes also in the night Bazaar.
