Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The Sanctuary of Tawaret

The old religions seem to be alive and well in these wild and remote parts of the Kingdom.

This morning I came across this small shrine. It seems to be devoted to Tawaret the protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility who takes the form of a hippopotamus. She is accompanied by a Venus figurine from the Roman period, with a head in the form of an all-seeing eye.

Perhaps a link with the old religion of the fabled Roman 9th legion which disappeared from the pages of history whilst on campaign in this untamed land?
