Everyday I Write The Book

Southampton Syndrome

It's bit like Stockholm syndrome, where people who have been taken hostage start to empathise with their kidnappers and lose the ability to behave rationally; and there is also a literal Swedish connection.

In short we went to Ikea in Southampton and were brainwashed, as usual, into spending several hundred pounds. But as TSM said, it was okay, because we exercised restraint and put back the £20 mirror we were going to buy.* So clearly we weren't out of control at all.

The IKEA in Southampton is much better than the London ones and you get a terrific view of the big liners from the upper car park levels. This one is called Anthem of the Seas and has a staggering five thousand rooms. Imagine an average of three people per room plus all the crew and you have a floating community of probably 20,000. As for the cabins ...

There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same...

* Actually it was out of stock ...
