Wilburn Street Basin
Before there were good public sewerage systems (sorry, I know it's now the weekend), the euphamistically titled "night soil" was collected by cart, transported to boats in the basin here (this is the entrance to the river), and then taken down the Irwell (this was before the Ship Canal) and deposited on the Mosses to the west of Salford.
Work has now started on new apartment blocks, with the Basin as a feature within the overall development. Its an upmarket future for a site with a downmarket past.
