St Lawrence, Mereworth
This Grade 1 listed church is unsual amongst country parish churches in having the most unexpected neoclassical interior built like a Roman basilica. Click here to view It was built in the mid 1740s for John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmoreland who had knocked down the original medieval village church to allow for a Palladian ( extravagant Roman villa) ) extension to his castle (sorry - fortified manor house). Obviously a man with grandiose tastes and a lot of money
