Poignant Reminder of a Beautiful Lady

I must have walked past this spot dozens of times over the last year and never looked down to ground level but the sun was shining on the inscriptions and that caught my attention.  The first inscription is hard to read as it is done in slate and has become worn but it must be over 30 years old because it commemorates the wedding of Princess Diana to Prince Charles in 1981.  Notice it says "this fountain" commemorates?  I do remember at the time of the wedding we all went a bit bonkers and created lots of water related features around the country - many of which were very soon closed down due to health and safety issues (risk of drowning, breaking a leg etc. etc.)  The very easy to read plaque needs no explanation of course but is also a reminder that Diana did indeed become the "people's princess" - something I think even old Abe Lincoln would have approved (he's right behind - you can see his legs!).

Ps - she was only 20 when she married and only 36 when she died - how very sad...
