Heron in Flight
Late this afternoon, we drove on over to Geneva, at the north end of Seneca Lake. I think Seneca is the largest of the Finger Lakes, and it is so beautiful!
We stopped and had lunch at a Chinese buffet and feeling overstuffed, needed to get out to walk a little!
There is a very nice state park located at Geneva, so we made our way over there. The park is quite large and it was nice just looking around, although I was disappointed not to see many ducks on the lake.
Do note all the "noise" in the photo...it seriously is the Cottonwood "fluff". At times, it looked like it was snowing!
We went back to the marina area and ooohed and awwwed at all the huge houseboats parked in the slips. People spend time living on their boats just like others live in RV's!
As we were leaving, I saw a Great Blue Heron standing in the water running along the side of the road. This must be an inlet or outlet, but the water looked funny, as there was debris from the Cottonwood trees covering the surface!
I decided that the late afternoon sun was just "picture perfect", so I hopped on over and walked out on a little dock to photograph the bird. It saw me coming toward it and took off.
I watched and saw the Heron land down a little ways, so I walked on, hoping it wouldn't take off again! It wasn't too sure so just as I got the camera poised, off it went again!
I was ready!! I was so thrilled to get not one, but several great shots of this bird in flight! What a thrill this was...I chose this photo because as I was snapping away, I heard a loud splash, but didn't see what made the noise. At first, I thought I was hearing things, but as you can see, the water directly below the Heron is splashing!
I wondered if a fish hopped up at that moment...while kayaking earlier today, we saw fish jump out of the water on the lake!
