First Orchid
My first sighting of orchids this year. We were with a small group of walkers on a circular walk near Lower Ashton on the edge of Dartmoor. The rain held off and we had good views of the lush, rolling hills of Devon. The walk started with a visit to a 15th Century church at High Ashton with an Elizabethan pulpit and an ornate 15th Century wooden screen and benches. We then walked up and down various hills and across fields and through several woods where these Orchids were seen. I believe they are the Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula). The woods were also full of Primroses and Bluebells. We finished by walking back along the River Teign to the local pub for a late lunch. Another good varied walk.
