Arizona Dreamin’

Woodworker

This is a great view of the cap of an Acorn Woodpecker.  They are one of my favorite birds because of their rich contrasting red, white and black colors. Their face is cream (as if wearing makeup to look their best when going out for the day).

These woodpeckers live in oak and mixed oak-conifer forests on slopes and mountains in eastern Arizona, western New Mexico and along the West Coast.

Reminiscent of a troupe of wide-eyed clowns, Acorn Woodpeckers live in large groups. Their social lives are endlessly fascinating: they store thousands of acorns each year by jamming them into specially made holes in trees. A group member is always on alert to guard the hoard from thieves, while others race through the trees giving parrot-like waka-waka calls.
