40 Acre Rock
The hubby and I (and the dog) drove a couple of hours to visit a place called the 40 Acre Rock. It is a large flat granite rock that is sitting out in the middle of a forest. The "rock" is about as big as two football fields or so, I think it might be something like 14 acres total. There are shallow craters where water pools on the surface of the rock and a red stemmed plant with tiny white flowers is growing abundantly. I will be researching to see what that may be. Areas of the rock are covered with thick green or black moss. The rock gently slopes downhill and there is a hiking trail.
We followed one part of the trail for a ways into the woods and came upon a small waterfall. I was thrilled to find several different kinds of wildflowers. ( See the waterfall and some flowers in the extras!)
As usual, the place is graffitied but it is really not distracting or ugly. Some gentle soul drew a huge white star connecting it by a path that goes several 100 feet to another star. Art on the rock!
A very unique place in our state. The hubs thinks it might have been an earthquake centuries ago and that may be what happened. Now that I have been there, I really want to know how or why this rock is here!
