Distorted Rocks......

................at Punakaiki, NZ

Rainwater, wind and seawater have sculptured these unusual tower-like shapes at Punakaiki.

This morning we returned to the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes as we wanted to see the blowholes performing at high tide. We weren’t disappointed. The three main features of this national park can be seen in my extra photos.

Further along our journey home is a photo of the Buller River at Kilkenny Lookout and Hawk’s Crag in the Lower Buller Gorge. The narrow road is actually cut into the cliff that drops into the Buller River.

We finally made it home, with time to unpack the car before a light meal and out for an evening meeting.

Extra photos
1:  ‘Surge Pool’. The sea charges in underneath the rocks creating a ‘washing machine’ effect.
2: ‘Chimney Pot Blowhole’. Columns of spray appear like smoke as the sea gushes in through a narrow rock channel
3: ‘Putai’ is the biggest blowhole. The sea thunders through the caverns below and eventually a volume of water is pushed high into the air.
4: Buller River at Hawk’s Crag & Kilkenny Lookout
5: A truck navigating the narrow road at Hawk’s Crag. An impressive sight.
