Schloss Neuschwanstein

It was raining all day in Munich so I decided to see some of the Bavarian countryside and visit Neuschwanstein castle. The weather was also pretty miserable there but I still got some good views of the castle and the panoramic surroundings.

It's hard to believe this fairy tale-like structure was built the same time as the Empire State Building. King Ludwig II really wanted a fancy castle to compete with the one on the next hill. It was used as a location in the film of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and also features on many travel-themed Pinterest boards.

In the evening I had my first experience of a German Beer hall and stumbled across some free music concerts for the bank holiday. One was a rock band playing in the main square followed by an organ concert in a church nearby - something completely different!
