Today I walked the Water of Leith Walkway - 13 miles from Balerno to Leith. The Water of Leith cascades over numerous weirs all the way down to the sea. Many water wheels powered mills to produce snuff, paper, textiles,
The Balerno loop railway carried all these goods and passengers too from its opening in the 1840’s. The trains terminated at the - now defunct - Princes Street Station.
This was the railway tunnel that led east from Colinton Station. Now it’s part of the Walkway.
