The long hot road to Nilaveli
Andy had another bad night last night and we are both up at the crack of dawn and go and look for somewhere else to stay. We've had a few roaches in the room (more than anywhere else on the trip) and the mattresses are pretty bad. We do tell them but they don't seem bothered so we end up moving just next door to a much cleaner little hut run by a lovely local woman which is also slightly cheaper.
We hire bikes and cycle to Nilaveli beach about 10km away to see if we might want to move there over the next few days. It's further and hotter than we thought and we come off the main road a few times to head to the beach. It's a huge expanse of sand but, although there's hotels dotted here and there, there doesn't seem to be any central place where it's all going on and there's also no shade on the beach.
After resting in the shade of a big tree with some roti and a cold drink we head off again and find a spot on the beach with a few palm trees for shade so we stop for a swim and a few hours chill time. There are a few people who pass through but we mainly have the beach to ourselves. Although it's beautiful, it makes us appreciate the few bars and cafes on Uppuveli. We cycle back just before the rain comes in again. We thought it was meant to be dry season on the east coast!
