Today is the centenary of Britain's worst railway disaster at Quintinshill.

I was hoping to visit the cemetery in Leith today but work got in the way. I took this blip as I crossed the East Coast mainline on the way to the gym for a swim.

Our modern railway is now one of the safest in the world. Network rail workers like these, risk their lives to ensure that the trains can run at speeds approaching 100 mph on this piece of track just three miles from Waverley station.
