Derek Jarman found sculpture
Day 4 in Kent was spent in the desolate richness of Dungeness - one of the best examples of shingle wilderness in the world. The RSPB reserve was superb. From one spot we watched 7 Hobbies hunting over Denge Marsh, while a pair of Marsh Harriers quartered the reed beds and Cettis Warblers gave their raucous calls from two nearby blocks of scrub. After this, we made a pilgrimage to Prospect Cottage, the traditional fishermans cottage where the artist, writer and film-maker, Derek Jarman, lived and constructed an amazing natural garden with lots of quirky sculptures made from beach debris and abandoned boat parts. The afternoon was completed by a mug of tea at the cafe by the old lighthouse, with the enormous structure of the nuclear power station looming over us and the constant sound of exploding artillery shells and smallarms fire from the nearby MOD ranges. A day of amazing contrasts!
