Grand Fountain, Paisley

Fountain Gardens opened in 1868, a gift from Thomas Coats, the sewing thread magnate.  The Glasgow Cast Iron Foundry of George Smith & Co provided all the ironwork including this splendid fountain, four smaller fountains, all the railings, gates and gate posts, ornate shelters and park benches.  A real treat for this once overcrowded part of Paisley.

The fountain has recently been restored and repaired, with new water pumps. There was a grand switch on in September 2014.  I do like the life sized walruses, each named by a local primary school.
