Isles of Shoals

Off in the distance is a group of small islands and rock ledges known as the Isles of Shoals.  They are about 6 miles off the coast straddling the borders of New Hampshire and Maine.  In the 16th century they were used as seasonal fishing camps for Native Americans and early in the 17th century were "discovered" by Captain John Smith.  The monument has a replica of Captain Smith's original map of the area from here to Boston in 1614 and was instrumental in the immigration of Englishmen to Plimouth and Boston.

We spent a perfectly sunny afternoon visiting with some cousins visiting here in New Hampshire from New Jersey, (about 6 hours away)  just driving up the coast, stopping and getting out for a closer look.  Later stopped for lunch on the water and watched the fog roll in.

Definitely look in LARGE for a better view.
