Not Porty People or Places

No petrol.

No power.

After an excellent day's work here in Lagos, Nigeria we went to the Yacht Club on the lagoon for drinks at sundown. All very pleasant and all very colonial.

My late Uncle worked here in the 1960's. I found myself wondering how much he would have recognised today.

We had five power cuts in the course of today. We drove past this blacked out petrol station on our way home to the hotel. There is also, surprisingly for a primary petrol producing country, an acute shortage of fuel here at the moment.

The views across the lagoon at sunset were stunning. The people here are incredibly welcoming. Despite being so near the equator the temperature is very pleasant. With the election of the new President, whose inauguration took place on Friday, there is a tangible feeling of optimism in this remarkable country at the moment.

I can see why my late uncle and his family so enjoyed living here.
