...At Beltane in the aulden time, it was the custom gay,                          To gather on the village green and hail the festal day,             


Today is the opening day of the annual Beltane Festival in Peebles.   James 2nd of Scotland is reported to have attended the Beltane in the 12th century.   It fell into disuse and didn't return until the beginning of the 20th century and has been very popular through the intervening years.   A thousand people attended the open air service at the ruined Cross Kirk.
