I don't know why a bike shop would sell so short a cable, nor how I managed to buy it, but by taking out a bit of housing and dispensing with the Travel Agent it just barely fitted. Perhaps it's meant for something with a really short bar-brake distance, like a child's bike. This only needs to last a couple of days until my new linear-pull levers arrive.
