Elcho Castle, Perthshire
Feeling a bit sore this morning, due to having fallen asleep on the sofa while watching a late movie last night. G had retired to bed after a night out, and so snored his way to morning without realising that I had not come up.
After a bit of a tidy up, and some washing hung out, we decided to make the most of it being dry, and headed to Elcho Castle which sits close to the banks of the Tay.
Another Historic Scotland stunner, and I'd have to say - one of my favourites so far. Lots of lovely little nooks and crannies that had me planning where I'd put the furniture if I lived there!
Unlike the other castles we have recently visited, this one did not belong to the Royal Family, but was built for a noble family called Wemyss, and was a country residence for them. It was built in 1560, used as a holiday home until the mid 18th century, and then was repaired substantially in the 19th century, before being entrusted to state care in 1929.
After our visit, and a clamber around the ramparts and the castle grounds, we headed home to cut the grass and tidy up before G's son and his girlfriend arrived for tea. It was his birthday yesterday, and they are moving into a new flat together in a fortnight, so we just gave him some money to help out.
They are gone now, comfortably full of delicious Indian food from our local restaurant. G has settled in front of Glastonbury on the telly, and I'm just getting ready for bed.
A very nice Saturday indeed.
