Nike Woman's 10k series
Day 52 streaking
"Sisters are doing it for themselves"
The days has arrived for the Nike Woman's 10k race. I have to admit, I woke up this morning and thought I don't want to do this. Im tired and I'm still injured, I'm just not ready. But as its a family affair, my 3 sisters were also running and my whole family minus my brother (too early for him) was going down to Victoria Park in East London to show support and cheer. I decided whatever happens I'm going to cross that finishing line, in not going to let anyone down!
After lots of jumping photos in front of the #werunlondon sign, more pictures inside the race village , grabbed some water, toilet stop, chatted to some of my friends who I managed to bump into who were either running or cheering. We headed towards the start.
When I initially signed up I was aiming to get a PB so I was given a Blue band (55mins) but since then my fitness levels have not been up to standard so I dropped back to run with 2 of my sisters in the Orange band (sub 1hr 10) The other one is a fast runner so she went in the Purple band (sub 50mins)
After a few encouraging words from Ellie Goulding, who was injured so couldn't run, some warm up exercises from Master Trainer Sonja Moses and the Equinox team 10,000 girls in Orange finally managed to cross the start 30 mins after the start time!! And the sun came out! Not a happy with this!!
I ran at a steady pace with my sisters, soaking in the atmosphere which was amazing, saw the sign for my crew Queens of the jungle and all the other crew signs. Plenty of water stations but it was either a huge 600ml bottle or a plastic cup..didn't think that through. And also oranges at 2.5k...why??
Lots of people cheering all the way including my run club buddies and of course Run Dem Crew who again were out in full force! But the highlight for me was my whole family being there. Seeing them was amazing especially High Fiving my niece, who absolutely loved it and seeing my parents. I needed them the second time round the park as my knees and hamstrings started to hurt after 5k (start of the second loop) and exhaustion kicked in.
Seeing them spurred me on another 500m before I said to one of my sisters (the other one had already ran off) I needed to walk because I was in pain, she was glad I said that because she too was injured! So we walked, power walked to a certain point the ran at a quicker pace and then power walked again. Until just after the 8k mark, this was on the other side of Victoria Park with no shade!!! The sun was beaming down and I had no energy to run anymore. I bumped into my friend Danielle and we walked together, my sister decided to run off. I let her do this. So Danielle and I walked, ran, walked. We both didn't feel like running today, she did a triathlon a couple of weeks ago so was tired too. As we jogged the last km and headed towards the finishing line I saw the count down 600m, 400m, 200m...I then had a burst of energy and. Said to D, let's sprint! So we both just let loose and sprinted to the end!!! Felt good finishing!
Picked up my goodies, water, banana, winner necklace (would have preferred a medal) got my winners prosecco, met up with sisters and my other running sisters. Even managed to see a couple of my favourite trainers Joslyn Thompson Rule and the lovely Rory Knight (we tormented him) More pics taken it was time to leave. I finished in at 1:06 not my best but I'm glad I did it with my sisters! I'm very proud of them and especially with one sister finishing at 1hr for her first 10k!
