Calgary on Canada day 2015

Today July 1st, Canada Day, I went on a long bike ride this afternoon with Elinor and looked back from this vantage point at that city I have called home for 10 years.  Its history in many ways epitomizes that of much of Canada itself.
Founded in 1875  Calgary's growth has been fostered by the railway, the stampede and for the last 100 years oil. The city has clearly grown since then, even now you can make out a half dozen cranes in the background leading new building projects. Currently, the Bow tower dominates the skyline nut there are rumours of a taller building to come in the next couple of years.
The Bow river, seen here at the weir just on the East side of the city, is integral to the city's character.  from the glaciers of the Rockies west of Banff, it flows for a total of almost 1500 miles East of here to Hudson Bay.
