Going for gold

Proud mummy day today ;) Ophelia repeated her sports day success from nursery last year and brought home a report which made us wonder what happens to our wilful and challenging child when she crosses the school threshold: she's way exceeded expectations in every single EYFS category and is extremely engaged in all her activities.
Grace can run like the wind and, despite her tiny frame, outran many of her classmates to come third in the running race. However, she struggles to do activities where she has to coordinate different things - so when she had to jump forwards with a ball between he knees she didn't get more than a metre before the rest of the competitors had crossed he line. That upset her terribly, and she sat out away from everyone for the next few events. A very kind teacher supported her back to the competition when the other classes did their football dribble race. Grace is good with a football. However, for Grace's year they did skipping instead, something Grace didn't realise until she was on the starting line. She's recently learned how to skip on the spot after a ton of hard work but running and skipping at the same time is another matter. She progressed ever so slowly on her own , and kept going long after the others has finished and when the next race was ready to start. Everyone cheered her on and she crossed the line eventually, but she was in tears the whole time and then went off head in hands. I intervened at that point. Poor, poor baby girl. She is so determined. I'm so sorry that she had to go through that. Luckily she bounces back super quick from such things and was talking excitedly about pugs and Harry Potter again on the way home. Grace's report was also really impressive. She has overcome a lot socially and emotionally this year and has made a good friend in the year above her. They will be in the same class together again next year. Gracie is a bright girl with a thirst for knowledge and an incredible need to please and follow rules in school. She tries hard but struggles to cope emotionally. Thankfully her teachers have supported her needs brilliantly over the past three years in that class. Next year she has a new teacher and TA so hopefully they too will help her in the same way.
