The Right Sort of Wet

I spent the afternoon today at a constructed wetland workshop led by two farm wetland consultants from Sweden who specialise in innovative flood management techniques.

Here in Scotland we use both large scale heavily engineered solutions to flood management (often after we have permitted development on the floodplain!) and small scale natural ecological solutions such as wetlands, retention ponds and detention basins. The Swedish examples seem to marry these two together by constructing large natural wetlands which are meticulously managed and maintained.

All very interesting stuff and the torrential rain certainly added a little something on the site visit to Tarland community wetland which followed the workshop.
