A typical Sussex Oast House.

We were driving through the village of Danehill in East Sussex when I spotted this lovely old Oast House. Many have  now been converted into dwelling houses but this one remains in its original condition. Originally built in and around the 17th century and designed to dry hops for the brewing industry. The hops were spread out over three very thin, perforated floors and then dried by hot air which was generated from a wood or charcoal fired kiln on the ground floor.
