A Multiplicity Of Opportunities...
...but which to blip? By complete coincidence, we discovered a few new places of interest.
If we had alighted the bus at the right stop in Cramond we would not have seen the Walled garden, woods and playground, from which we saw the remains of the Roman fort for the first time. Close by is Cramond Tower, which we had not seen before, especially from its front entrance (see extra 1).
If the cafe in Cramond had not been busy we would not have walked along the promenade to use the Silverknowes cafe, but had that not been under refurbishment we would not have walked up to Marine Drive and therefore seen the Muirhouse Mansion (see extra 2). And if the Silverknowes caravan park opposite had had a cafe we would not have been advised a route to Morrison's which took us past this totally unexpected body of water, which I have chosen as the main picture. I took it to be a flooded quarry.
Looking at the NLS map library site I note that it is not recorded before 1902, when it appears as a reservoir on Bartholomews maps and continued as such until the 1939 -40's Later maps give no explanation. As the gasworks appear on the adjacent site in 1907 it is probable that the reservoir was built to serve that, but on no map is there mention made of it being a quarry beforehand, so one wonders what became of the stone that was excavated..
