Grotesques

Whoever remodelled the middle gateposts at Penicuik House has a wonderful sense of humour. These grotesques are only 4 inches or so across but correspond to the rather more traditional carvings below the upper section of the outer gateposts, which are more like the bottom right photo. On our next visit I shall be sure to examine the other side.
