The Tungsten Mines - Lake District
Mining has taken place here at Carrock for over 150yrs. Deep underground Lead, Arsenic andTungsten ores were extracted whist on the surface they were crushed and washed extracting the minerals. This is the only example of a Tungsten mine outside of Cornwall. Mining stopped here in1981 and these remains are all that is left.
A cold rainy Saturday and the first day of school holidays, we saw no one and we were out for 2 hours. The wind was cool, it was very misty with black skies were abundant. Yanu had a great time running backwards and forwards from one of us to the other. She is nine and a half and acts like a puppy. Tea or Dinner if you are from the South was had at the 'Herdwick' Penruddock I simply had Scampi but it was beautifully cooked. Bottle of chilled white or cheeky Spanish Rioja, not a bad day really.
