Scotney Castle, Lamberhurst, Kent.
We visited this wonderful National Trust place near Royal Tunbridge Wells today. It is a medieval moated manor house built around 1380 on an island on a lake. The gardens are pretty spectacular and in the quarry garden, there is a 100 million year old impression of a dinosaur's footprint. In 1778 a new castle was built in the grounds using stone from their own quarries. In 1970, the whole estate was left to the National trust which let out several of the apartments in the new castle, one of the tenants being Margaret Thatcher who used it as a weekend escape from her Westminster life!
