After a 4.5 hour journey on Friday (supposed to be 2.5!) we arrived at Astley Castle near Birmingham. The fortified manor was destroyed by fire in the 1970's and left to go to ruin. In 2013 the Landmark Trust restored part of the building and stabilised the ruins in the rest, creating a unique property with modern walls in the places where there is empty space, modern oak floors and doors with bare stone and brick interior walls with the old ruin still surrounding the modern glass and wood masterpiece.
