Sir Archibald McIndoe, Plastic Surgeon.
When you drive through the town of East Grinstead, in West Sussex you cannot miss this bronze statue of Sir Archibald McIndoe treating a badly wounded World War two RAF pilot. Sir Archibald worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital in the town where he developed new plastic surgery techniques to treat patients who had been horribly burned in combat. The statue was sculpted by Martin Jennings whose father Michael was treated by Sir Archibald after his tank was hit in 1944. Jimmy Edwards was also one of his patients after he had been shot down over Arnhem in 1944, his trademark handlebar moustache provided the perfect cover for his scars. As a result of Sir Archibald's efforts, the people of East Grinstead were renown for giving all the patients a very friendly welcome and was hailed as the town which didn't stare!
