Fine Art Triumphs
A visit to Yorktown was the final stop in our 3 day early American History experience. We started to see their girls’ eyes glaze over as the Park Ranger talked for more than an 1 hour about the minute details of the Battle of Yorktown, the final battle of the Revolutionary War. We decided then and there that it was time to change it up a bit, and so we headed off to Richmond to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Fortunately our twins love art museums so this is where we spent a few quiet, unhurried, air-conditioned hours before heading home. I love the beautiful museum lighting and was particularly pleased with this view of one of the atriums.
We enjoyed seeing the recently redone French Painting gallery with the newly acquired works from the Mellon collection. Paul Mellon died in 1999 and left a number of fine paintings to the museum, including paintings by Van Gogh, Seurat, Pissarro and Gauguin, but they were to remain with his wife, Bunny Mellon until her death. She lived until the age of 103 and only just died in 2014.
