Dartmouth Steam Railway
We have visitors at the moment so we went to Dartmouth today from Goodrington on the 10.30 from Paignton. It was packed. Early Health and Safety notices can be found on the carriages- Caution do not lean out of the windows - but a cautionary mildly dangerous lean out was exhilarating, not unlike how a dog must feel riding the wind out of a car window. A great day out. Looked up the Lydham Manor in my Observers Book of Railway Locomotives (1960) - I knew it would come in handy. It was built in 1938 for the Great Western Railway, has a water capacity of 3,600 galls., and ...you must have noticed- cylinders set between bogie wheels. The carriages had lovely red plush seats and obviously the trains were dead on time. The station at Kingswear , where you transfer to the ferry for Dartmouth, has many period touches but also some modern ones as you can see. Long live steam.
