Bellbird

Anthornis melanura, female, endemic to New Zealand. About 20 cms total length. She is puffed up against the cold. In warm weather she is slim and sleek.

The other day I put honey water in the little fluid feeder for the first time in about seven months. In just a few hours it was discovered by the bellbird that claims my garden as part of her territory. Since then she has visited frequently, consuming a quarter of a cup of the sweet water each day. She is very puzzled by the feeder. When she has finished drinking she pecks at the sides and under parts, and also inspects the nearby grain feeder, though grain is not part of her diet. She eats nectar, fruit and insects.

Bellbirds have the most beautiful song, and she usually sings in my garden if she is feeding, but she hasn't lately. I'm wondering if there are no other bellbirds around for her to proclaim her territory to.

This is not a clear photo. I took it through a window.
