Alan Mathieson Turing 1912-1954
Fiona and I had a day in Manchester with my Aussie mate Blayne Whiteman and his cousin Aaron. Blayne's partner Catherine joined us for a Thai supper.
Wall to wall sunshine all day, and a good experience all round.
We visited Sackville Park en route to view the City Hall and then Salford Quays and the Imperial War Museum.
This is the statue in Sackville Park of Alan Mathieson Turing (1912-1954), born in Wilmslow near Manchester.
Turing is here depicted sitting on a park bench, holding a bitten apple. He was found dead with a bitten apple at his side, allegedly contaminated with potassium cyanide.
The death was controversial. Officialdom's verdict was 'suicide'; but many believed assassination - as a perceived security risk because of his homosexuality.
In this park the staue is honoured by the gay and lesbian community as an iconic victim of prejudice and hate.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009 made a full apology on behalf of Parliament.
The plaque says Turing was the Father of Computer Science; Mathematician; Logician; Wartime Enigma Codebreaker; Victim of Prejudice.
