Fred & Andy

We're not going anywhere today

We check the airport in the morning and its still open so off we go. We check in and all seems well. We sit in the departure lounge and start to hear rumours that Bali Airport has been closed again. We wait for announcements. Flights are first announced as being delayed then cancelled but the announcements are unclear.

Everyone is trying to get information and the airport staff are pretty useless. We are due to fly with Lion Air (Wings) and they have left a very sweet but very young boy to deal with all the irate customers. We try to speak to someone more senior but there's no chance. After speaking to staff from another airline we discover that all international flights go via Bali so trying to get to another airport on the island would be useless and that Bali airport will be closed until at least 5pm. Flores airport closes at 4.30pm and they don't fly out at night so that's that ... no flights today.

Our options are to turn up at the airport tomorrow morning at 7.30am and to try and get on another flight which are all fully booked at the moment or to get a refund and rebook ourselves. We go downstairs to try to get a refund but, because its Sunday and the banks are closed, they have no cash and advise us to come back tomorrow also. Other people are ditching the flights and rushing back to town to try to get on a boat. There's a boat/bus combo that gets to Bali in about 24 hours. We're not sure we fancy this and hear there's a storm coming anyway so that boats may be cancelled but, if not they will probably be overcrowded and dangerous.

We decide to try the airport again in the morning so head back to town. We meet the guys we did our freediving with and they are due to take a ferry the next morning to do the boat/bus trip. The whole of the town is without internet or phones at the moment because of the storm and the volcano ... we think we'll just have to wait it out and at least try and leave the island safely, even if it takes a day or two longer.

We're due back for Fred's dad's 80th celebrations in Bournemouth but perhaps we won't make it!
