Lochranza Castle

The castle at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran dates back to the 13th century and was probably built by the Macsween, lords of Knapdale.

It passed to the Stewart's of Menteith and became a royal castle when Robert Stewart became king in 1371.

By the 16th century the Montgomeries had taken over and their ownership continued for a remarkable two hundred and fifty years.

"In one room there is a fire peice and fire large enough to have roasted an ox" Thomas Pennant, 1772
