Hypnotised by Hollyhocks
August is the month when I go seed-hunting. Two years ago, when I was visiting my parents in Sussex, we went to a house called Charleston, which was the home and meeting place of members of the Bloomsbury set. The church nearby has lovely murals painted by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Outside the church was a row of magnificent hollyhocks and I took home some seeds and planted them, not expecting much, because I've never seen hollyhocks growing in our part of the world. But here they are...a row of huge flowery spires in sorbet colours. The bees were enjoying them today as well.
